[email protected] The crown of a hat can be shaped various ways, if you don't enjoy the way a hat looks, consider changing the style of the crown.. it should suit the body type and face shape,
That’s just taste,not really..rules.
We all see it differently.
Choose what feels right for you
functionally and cosmetically
Here we discuss 10 shapes,plus Open Crown,
which is just round,like the upper half of a sphere.
There are a few more basic ones, many are slight variations of these shapes,
things like the Telescopic Crown,
(which is quite similar to a pork Pie, but definitely different)
or a Bubble Crown ( like a Center Crease-pinch Front, with a little bubble in the roof of the crown)
We'll go through the following different crown shapes in this video:
1.Open Crown
2.Center crease
3. Center crease-pinch front
4. Teardrop ("C-Crown")
5. Diamond ("3 finger crease")
6. Cattleman ("Rancher" "3 finger crease"))
7. Gus ("Tom Mix" "10 Gallon")
8. Deuce tres ("Swirl")
9. Deuce tres-pinch front ("X swirl")
10. Tyrolean ("Mountie" "Smoky the Bear" "Trooper")
11. Telescopic or Gambler crown
I'll get to these in detail, and there are many,many more, including a long,long list of traditional western hat shapes, too many too get into here, so I'll just cover a few basic ones here.
Most of these can be done by hand, with steam..a few are almost impossible to get perfect by hand and require molds or forms made of wood or metal,called hat blocks.
For instance, the flat top of a top hat is impossible to get perfect by hand, often a person hand steaming a hat will go with the Telescopic crown or the pork pie because it allows you to set the crown at any height a customer desires.
A customer often wants their top hat crown to be fairly low in height,and the hat itself may have a lot of felt material to begin with.
if they want the hat low,then where do you put all the extra material? the telescope and pork Pie allows you to cleverly hide the extra,unwanted felt inside itself and essentially it customizes the crown's height to whatever you choose, high or low..
If you practice, you can do almost any of these shapes by hand..
This is done without steam,
results would be way nicer,smoother if i had done so with the use of a steamer
, to save time,I skipped the steam..just to make the video go swiftly..but without steam, the shapes will not hold,nor will they look great.. but u get the idea. These look good enough for quick examples. later we'll explore each shape separately and add flair to each one.
This video will be in 2 parts,
part 2 will get into the Tyrol & Canadian Mountie crease, We'll shape a Gambler or Telescopic crown, and talk about how it differs from a Pork Pie. We'll also talk about some western creases later on.
