Laura and Melissa take you on a tour of German Village. It's a popular area recommended when people want to LIVE IN COLUMBUS, OH! Watch this video to understand why.

At one point Columbus city leaders demolished about 60 acres of German Village to build the interstate system. More of the neighborhood's properties were identified as blight and were on the brink of demolition, but the actions of a few early residents turned that around. Now German Village is identified as one of the most desirable neighborhoods across the nation.

BACK TO GERMAN VILLAGE.
Where is it? Nestled immediately south of downtown. When you walk across the interstate bridge that separates the two, the mood shifts. Skyscrapers are replaced with brick homes. German Village is a scooter ride from the statehouse and filled with bikers. Residents often walk; if you have a car, you might rely on street parking because not all homes have garages.

HISTORY
You can feel the history when you roll down the roads of German Village. About half of the streets are still brick pavers.

The preservation work in German Village is highly praised. Residents volunteer their time to create a model of urban neighborhood preservation and revitalization. The neighborhood dates back to the 1800's when it was settled largely by German immigrants. Years passed and world changes lead to decline. In the 1950's the community faced demolition. Frank Fetch and others began sprucing up properties one-by-one and proved there was more life left on the cobblestone streets of German Village.

FOOD
If you're a foodie, welcome home. Pistacio Vera, Lindy's, Barcelona, Thurman's Cafe, Mohawk, Brown Bag Deli, Katzingers, High Beck, Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream, Katzinger's, Schmidts and more. You don't have to take Laura and Melissa's word for it- the flavors and spots here have landed on top foodie lists from Guy Fieri to the New York Times.

HOUSING
Residents pay for the level of walkability and desired location, though. The prices of properties in German Village are higher than the average within Central Ohio.
The Village has a single commercially zoned strip along Livingston Avenue, but the bulk of the area is residential and mixed use.

PARKS
The parks here are worth a stroll. The area's most popular park is arguably Schiller Park, but there are hidden gems like Frank Fetch Park to enjoy, too.
