The takeaway can either make or break your golf swing. You either start your golf swing on the right foot or the wrong foot and it is very difficult to recover from a poor takeaway. The good thing is the golf takeaway can be extremely simple when you understand exactly where to move from. Most golfers worry about the path the club travels in the takeaway, the swing plane, or even the club face angle. When in fact, you should worry about what part of the body you're moving from.

I could list common takeaway problems that we see during our golf lessons, but in the end, all of them can be fixed by simply learning how to do the takeaway with my one secret move that I've taught our thousands of members.

Today, I'd like to demonstrate how you can address two takeaway flaws using an alignment rod. A common question I receive is about how much elevation is necessary in the takeaway. Adding elevation is crucial to ensure that the arms, hands, and club stay in front of the body during the backswing rotation. Let me guide you through a drill you can practice at home to achieve the correct elevation and prevent common mistakes.

Start by placing the alignment rod on the ground, positioning yourself so that you're on the front third of the rod. This means two-thirds of the rod is on your right side. In your setup, position your trail hand just on the inside of the alignment rod. The goal is to achieve both proper rotation and the right amount of elevation in your takeaway.

As you initiate your takeaway, focus on a big rotation while maintaining a slight elevation. As you begin to move the club back, you should see that when you reach a certain point, the clubface is nicely tied up, and your setup position remains intact. Avoid the tendency to push your arms and hands outward early in the backswing, as this will cause over-elevation and lack of proper rotation.

Another issue to address is the lead hand pushing the club head inside and rolling the club prematurely. To work on this, set up just inside the alignment rod with your trail hand, visible from your viewpoint. Keep your hands inside the rod until the club is parallel to the ground, which should happen at the end of the alignment rod.

If you tend to push your hands outward when adding elevation, correct this by prioritizing rotation and maintaining the lead wrist's cupping. If you tend to throw the club inside by pushing your lead hand outward, focus on preserving the wrist positions and prioritize rotation.

In summary, use the alignment rod by placing it on the ground with two-thirds of it away from you. Set up just inside the rod with your trial hand. Maintain the proper wrist positions while rotating, and ensure the club doesn't cross the alignment rod until it's parallel to the ground. This will help you achieve the right amount of elevation while maintaining a correct takeaway and avoiding common flaws.
