Britannica 2001 (VBox, WinMe)

Well, it now time to do that book report. It's 2002, and my parent haven't upgraded the family PC to WinXP. Also, our household doesn't have Internet, as does so many other households during that time. While the internet is rapidly proliferating, it still out of reach for many, and for those who do have it, it's usually that slow dialup where the pages load faster than it takes for paint to dry. Everybody talks about this new thing called "Wikipedia". The democratic nature of it seems very appealing, even though many are quick to dismiss it at face value as a barren website full of inaccuracies. Make me wonder is these people are quick to judgement carrying preconceived biases and prejudices.

However, that report needs to be done, regardless of whether your house has internet or not. No need to worry though, as we now have a new copy of the Encyclopedia Britannica CD-ROM edition. With the latest information on many important topics, you hit that report right away. You know that your book report about pigeon racing will be the best damn report ever...

Like all over multimedia encyclopedias, there is a wealth of information about various topics like culture, science, politics, nature, etc. Loaded with audio, pictures, and video the size of a postage stamp, one gets a sense of depth. For those with an internet, the program will even update with the latest entries.

However, for those with the internet, that Wikipedia thing seems much more appealing, as it covers topics that Britannica, or any Encyclopedia won't touch. What if I want to do research about Prog rock. Are you telling me that bands like Yes, Pink Floyd and Genesis don't deserve mention. I want my Gentle Giant!? Who in the hell are these Britannica gatekeepers (maybe not mentioning Tales from Topographic Oceans is for the best). Regardless the internet would march on. The CD-ROM encyclopedia would still reign supreme, granted not for much longer.

VirtualBox is emulating a multimedia gaming PC with a single core allocated to it. The host has a Ryzen 5 5500 6-Core CPU running at 4.2GHz. There is 512MB's of RAM allocated to the VM, along with a VESA 1.2 Compatible display adapter with 3D passthrough acceleration enabled via the SoftGPU drivers. An AMD PCnet NIC is installed, along with a AC'97 audio device, with a Intel 828011AA chipset, enabled. Windows is running at the screen resolution of 800 by 600, 32-bit color depth. Windows ME is installed.
