On June29,1995, in the Seocho-gu district of Seoul, South Korea, the Sampoong Department Store collapsed due to a structural failure. The collapse was South Korea's worst peacetime disaster, killing 502 people and injuring 937 others. Until the September 11 attacks in New York City, it was the deadliest modern building collapse, as well as the deadliest non-deliberate building collapse.

Within minutes of the disaster, rescue crews were on the scene, and cranes and other heavy equipment arrived the next day. Lee Joon was convicted of criminal negligence and sentenced to ten and a half years in prison on December27, 1995. Prosecutors sought a twenty-year sentence for Lee Joon, but it was reduced to seven and a half years after an appeal. Lee Joon died of complications from diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney disease on October4,2003, just months after his release from prison.
