This piece, written in summer 2022, is a meditation on a well-known work by Orlando Gibbons, his ‘Song 46’, one of many pieces that he wrote for the first English hymn-book, 'Hymnes and Songs of the Church' published in 1623. In the early twentieth century, it was linked by Ralph Vaughan Williams to the poignant text 'Drop, drop, slow tears' by the poet Phineas Fletcher and published in 'The English Hymnal.’
