High atop the basalt crags of the Soulcrest Mountains stood the Obsidian Citadel, a foreboding fortress carved from the black volcanic glass of the same name. Its walls gleamed like midnight under the sun’s glare, and by moonlight, they became mirrors reflecting its pale glow, warning all intruders of its unassailable might. Constructed ages ago by the warlord Kagnaar the Ashen-Fist, it served both as a sanctuary from the winds of political alliances and as a testament to his unrelenting ambition.
Over the centuries, the Citadel changed hands through brutal conquest and cunning diplomacy, ultimately becoming a stronghold of the fanatical Ebon Sacrament — an order of warrior-priests devoted to a mysterious volcanic deity they claimed was sleeping beneath the Soulcrest range. From the towering ramparts, they practiced dark rites of magma-borne magic, harnessing the intense heat of the volcanic flows beneath the foundation stones. Many who sought to breach the fortress discovered their swords softened by unnatural flame or their siege engines left as smoldering ash.
In the year of the Red Tempest, an alliance of free cities and dwarven clans from the lowlands resolved to end the Ebon Sacrament's reign. They formed a grand coalition, led by the wise but war-weary King Hulran Stoneforge and the fiery-tempered Marshal Iren Thornwind, whose father was assassinated by the Sacraments years before. Learning of the infernal magic that fed the fortress, they devised a cunning strategy to cut off its source of power—an ancient lava conduit that ran deep beneath the citadel.
As the allied armies gathered under the shadow of the mountains, tremors shook the land, and sulfuric fumes from hidden volcanic vents stung the air. The Siege of the Obsidian Citadel began with a thunderous clash of steel and an onslaught of arcane blasts. Unholy chanting from the ramparts met the beating of dwarven war drums, while monstrous gargoyles crafted from living obsidian took flight, diving upon the siege lines. The defenders hurled heated stones and conjured searing streams of volcanic ash to repel wave after wave of attackers.
Despite early struggles, the coalition’s secret weapon—an elite band of dwarven sappers and arcane engineers—inched closer to the hidden lava channel beneath the Citadel. Night after night, they burrowed stealhily under the layers of rock and obsidian, guided by ancient maps rumored to predate Kagnaar’s time. Their goal was simple but deadly: collapse the lava conduit, cutting the fortress off from its molten lifeblood and weakening its magical defenses.
Tensions among the allies mounted as the siege dragged on. The dwarves grew impatient with the human lords, believing them overly cautious. The humans accused the dwarves of insular thinking and refusing to share their runic secrets. Meanwhile, whispers of betrayal spread through the ranks as rumors suggested some among the allied leaders had been corrupted by the Ebon Chorus’s promises of power.
After months of brutal conflict, the sappers succeeded; a massive underground detonation cut off the lava flow. Within hours the fortress’s once invulnerable walls began to crack, with arcs of flickering obsidian magic sputtering out like dying embers. The allied armies seized the moment, launching a final, bloody assault. When the gates were finally breached, the Ebon Sacrament made their last stand in the central temple—raising pillars of molten stone in a futile attempt to stave off the onslaught.
By dawn, the citadel’s walls lay broken, the magical gargoyles transformed back to simple shards of glass, and the Ebon Sacrament's chants were extinguished. Yet the victory was not without tears. Thousands of allied warriors perished, and the very land around the Obsidian Citadel was scarred by torrents of lava and collapsed tunnels. To this day, the Siege of the Obsidian Citadel stands as a grim testament to the price paid when mortal powers wrestle with the forces sleeping beneath the earth—and a reminder that no fortress is truly unassailable when unity and determination guides the righteous.
