I often get asked where I'm from, so I wanted to share with the world about my country Bhutan. A small Himalayan kingdom nestled in between two giants, China and India.

Popular Dishes of Bhutan

Today I am going to share with you guys some of the most popular dishes we eat in Bhutan. In Bhutan, the custom of eating dried vegetables and meat was due to the cold and harsh winters of Bhutan, esp. in the past, Bhutan was closed off to the rest of the world so Bhutanese people had to live off what they grew on their lands, and during cold winters, fresh vegetables and meat were scarce. On top of that there was no proper refrigerating system so our ancestors had to dry various meat and vegetables to preserve them for the cold winter months.

1. Sikam (Dried Pork Belly)
2. Shakam (Yak or Beef Jerky)
3. Momo (Dumplings)
Pork Momo, Beef Momo, Cheese Momo, Kewa Momo, Ema Datsi Momo
4. Ema Datsi (Chilli & Cheese)
Variations - Kewa Datsi (Potato & Cheese), Shamu Datsi ( Mushroom & Cheese), Hontsey Datsi (Spanish & Cheese), Laphu Datsi ( Radish & Cheese), Semchum Datsi (Beans & Cheese), Nakey Datsi ( Wild Fern & Cheese)
5. Puta (Sweet Buckwheat Noodles)
6. Juma (Blood Sausage)
7. Hontey (Buckwheat Dumplings with Turnip & Cheese fillings)
8. Thuep (Congee)
9. Mengay (Bhutanese Pizza)
10. Bathuep (Soup Noodle)
