There are few goals in watchmaking more universal than accuracy and consistency. The primary purpose of a watch is to tell the time, and without accuracy and consistency, any other features, details, or periphery is unimportant, if not utterly meaningless. And watches are, for the most part, tremendously accurate. In a day containing 86,400 seconds, even a watch that gains 30 or 60 seconds a day is doing an impressive. That said, attempts to create a more accurate watch have yielded compelling solutions over the years, and the fusée-and-chain transmission is one of the most compelling.

Functioning essentially as a variable gearbox, the fusée-and-chain transmission adjusts the rate at which energy is released from the mainspring of a watch using geometry. A constant force mechanism, as the fusée-and-chain is known, is a mark of truly committed watchmaking.
