Former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda, detained for suspected involvement in a coup attempt, on Friday (2/1) defied a condition for his release from jail into house arrest by verbally attacking his successor in court. Kaunda, who was appearing before the Lusaka high court to contest a state decision to arrest and detain him, told backers in a packed courtroom: "It's not Kenneth Kaunda who is on trial, it's President (Frederick) Chiluba who is on trial."
The hearing was later adjourned until Tuesday without any ruling either on formally charging Kaunda or releasing him altogether.
