Beckett Simonon Yates Full Brogue Shoe Review: Thoroughly Ornamented

In our continuing series on Beckett Simonon, today we're looking at the full brogue.

[00:26] Style & Construction

The Yates is a very aggressive, eye-catching brogue with plenty of pinking and perfing plus a toe medallion.

To give some background on brogues, they are an originally Scottish shoe worn in moorland. Originally, the holes were functional, because they allowed the wearer to easily drain water from the shoe.

Here we have a Blake stitch construction, while the upper is from full-grain Argentinian calfskin leather. We find 11-12 stitches per inch, and the interior lining is wholecut vachetta leather.

The wholecut lining eliminates any points of chafing for your foot as you walk.

There's a suede inset in the back of the shoe in order to prevent your heel from slipping. Also, you'll find this feature limits the potential for blisters on your heel during the break-in period.

Due to the Blake construction, the break-in period will be shorter. Besides this, Blake-constructed shoes are generally more affordable, which we see here.

[02:32] Dress Code & Formality

Full brogues are a casual shoe because of their rich ornamentation. Therefore, this shoe is not business professional, however as a dress shoe it still goes well with suits.

In the winter, you could pair this with a tweed suit to great effect, for example. In a business casual setting, the shoe would be excellent with a navy suit with no tie.

Here we have the Yates in a dark brown, which is just a step below black in terms of formality.
