Following the monetary dislocation of the third century CE, Diocletian aimed to restore the Augustan coinage structure. From 293 onward gold, silver, large billon, and fractional bronze coins provided a full range of denominations for an empire restored to its former glory. However, the Tetrarchy quickly unraveled after the abdication of Maximian and Diocletian in 305. Quite a few civil wars later, Constantine emerged as the sole emperor in 324. ANS Executive Director Gilles Bransbourg will discuss how during this twenty-year period, Roman coins reflected the economic and political crisis that led to the Christian empire.
