Buckle Up | Tom Evans' Trail Running Journey To WSER | adidas TERREX

Tom Evans, ultrarunner and former British Army Captain, raised eyebrows within the trail running community on his Western States Endurance Race debut in 2019 - finishing third with a record-breaking time for an overseas athlete. Despite this, Tom believed there were lessons to be learned from his trail running experience, ones which could create a whole new approach and may even pave the way to WSER glory in 2023.

The beating heart of America’s ultra-running calendar, WSER’s 100 miles of undulating high-altitude terrain has become the litmus test for identifying the great from the good of ultra running.

Sierra Nevada’s contrasting weather always plays a part, though, with snow-capped peaks giving way to sun-scorched earth and oppressive humidity which turns the air thick.

Anticipation was high on the day, fans and fellow athletes more than aware of the intense effort and refined training programme Tom had implemented in order to pursue the podium’s top step. Compared to 2019’s race, this was one where Tom’s concentration needed to be centred more upon avoiding defeat, with a growing sense it was his to lose.

But come the start line of WSER, there was only one question - would it all have been worth it?
