This somatic exercise is for loosening up the muscles of the shoulders. If the muscles that laterally rotate the shoulders are the tightest, start with moving the shoulder back instead. Or in other words, move first in the direction that is easiest for you. Typically I use this exercise for my clients after the muscles have already loosened somewhat to continue to work on freeing up the shoulder and increasing the range of motion.
