So many of you have been asking me about how to use Chromatics in their jazz playing, over the past years. So I finally made a Chromatic Guitar Lesson. I'll explain you the theory behind chromatics and you'll learn about chromatic passing notes and chromatic enclosures.

I'll first going to show you how chromatics generally work. We'll go through scales and add chromaticism as passing notes. We'll do a chromatic guitar excercise and then I'll teach you chromatic licks. I'll explain you note for note and I'll also play through them at a quite fast tempo, so you'll see and hear what the final lick sounds like.

Then I'll teach you about chromatic enclosures. We'll do some exercises on 2-note enclosures and 3-note enclosures, using the ionian and the dorian scale. After that I'll show you the practical use and create chromatic licks using these enclosures. And again I'll play through the chromatic jazz lines at fast tempo and at slow tempo.

Of course (as usual) I've made a Chromatic guitar licks TAB and some backing tracks, which you can download from one of the links above. Please read the instructions for the purchase! Now you can start doing your Chromatic guitar excercise as a warm up and use the licks to create your own chromatic guitar solo.

This lesson will help you sound a lot more sophisticated. If you're into modern jazz, chromatics are a must. Most people just play some wrong notes and claim "now it's jazz". Yeah, that's an old joke. The reality is you have to know when to play your chromatics. They have to fall on the beat (mostly at least). This is not so easily done during jazz improvisation. So we need to pre construct these kind of chromatic jazz lines, learn them by heart and them incorporate them into our solo. That's hard work and there's a lot of chromatic excercises involed in order to really improvise chromatics.
