Explaining Tagalog Root Words (E62)

Описание к видео Explaining Tagalog Root Words (E62)

This video starts with a story about Ross, a sales manager at a company in Manila and his sales agent, Noel. The story tells of Noel’s challenges in his job. The story is used as a devise to introduce the concept of how Tagalog words are constructed.

This video introduces the formula on how Tagalog words are created. This is with the combination of Root Words and Affixes. Affixes can be prefixes (words that are inserted at the beginning of the root word), suffixes (words inserted at the end of the root word) or infixes (words inserted into the root word).

Using the root word, HIRAP (poor, difficult, challenging), this video demonstrates how affixes are used to create new words, like:

• Mahihirap…poor people
• Kahirapan…poverty
• Pahirapan…to make something difficult for someone
• Pinahirapan…made something difficult for someone
• Nahihirapan…experiencing hardship
• Pinahirap…made something difficult
• Hihirapan…will make something difficult
• Nagpapahirap…something that makes something difficult
• Hirap na hirap…an adverb describing doing something with extreme difficulty

The story also introduces some common but hard to translate Tagalog words:

• Naman: an interjection that adds texture into the sentence. Depending on the context of the sentence or the conversation, it could mean, “on the other hand”, “likewise”, “so”, etc.
• Káya: can or to be able
• Kayâ: “that’s why”
