The BEST Way to Wrap and Fish Plugs for Salmon!! Gear, Tactics & Where to Fish

From this weeks show, Host, Duane Inglin jumped back into the "Bait Lab" and walks you through the A's to Z's on Plug Wrapping and Plug Fishing for Fall, Spring & Summer Salmon...Plugs are sometimes called crank-baits but in most salmon & steelhead fisheries they are referred to as plugs. Popular plugs include Kwikfish, Mag-Lips, Killer-Fish, U-20's and many other options.

There's a lot of details that can make-or-break your plug fishing experience. Salmon are finicky with what they decide to bite and little tactics can improve your odds - or get your plug ignored. Duane talks about what makes a good rod for plug fishing, from the tip action to the backbone and length. He also discusses using braided line (braid) for plug fishing, as opposed to mono (monofilament). This is something many anglers disagree on but there are reasons for both.

The duo-lock that is attached to the eyelet is where your line is tied. Tuning your plug is essential for getting it to run true - that's HUGE for whether or not a salmon will bite your plug. Duane discusses how to adjust the eyelet for tuning, he also gives a tip that can make your plug run true without having to adjust as much.

Duane also removes treble hooks from his plugs and goes with a barrel swivel and siwash hook, which can really help when a fish is jumping, turning and thrashing around. This keeps fish on better when they're fighting hard.

Coho (silver), Chum (dog) and Chinook (King) salmon absolutely love plugs. Dressing them up with bait can be a game-changer to getting them to hammer it. Sardine and Tuna are very deadly for getting that bite enticed. Pautzke gels also work very well if you don't want to mess with bait.
