What is Cauda Equina Syndrome?

Cauda Equina Syndrome is a relatively little known but serious condition that may occur as a result of a spinal cord injury. It is a condition that requires immediate medical treatment upon onset.
What causes Cauda Equina Syndrome?

Cauda Equina Syndrome

Beneath the lumbar section of the spinal cord there is a bundle of nerve roots known as the "cauda equina." This region controls bowel, bladder and sexual functions. If these nerves become compressed or paralyzed, sensation and movement of the lower body may become seriously compromised. The nerve roots that control bladder and bowel functions may also become disrupted.

Injury to this nerve system is considered a surgical emergency, and if it is not treated promptly it can lead to paralysis of the lower body, and potentially permanent loss of bladder and bowel control. This condition is referred to as "Cauda Equina Syndrome."

Although auto and motorcycle accidents, or any other situation that causes compression of the spinal cord in the cauda equina region can cause Cauda Equina Syndrome, there are a variety of other causes commonly known to result in Cauda Equina Syndrome. Surgical errors, anesthesia errors, hospital infections, herniated intervertebral discs, misdiagnosed spinal tumors, inflammatory conditions and degenerative diseases are some of the other potential causes of Cauda Equina Syndrome.

Cauda Equina Lawsuit Results: $1.1 Million Chiropractic Malpractice Failure to Diagnose Cauda Equina Syndrome

Eric Ratinoff recovered $1.1 million on behalf of a man whose chiropractor failed to diagnose Cauda Equina Syndrome, resulting in permanent paralysis. The compensation will pay for the client's long term medical treatment and attendant care needs for the rest of his life.

Common causes of Cauda Equina Syndrome

Some of the most common causes of injury to the spinal cord in the cauda equina region include:

Surgical errors
Direct trauma from lumbar puncture
Spinal anesthesia errors
Trauma from catheters
High local anesthetic concentrations around the cauda equina
Spinal Stenosis
Herniated lumbar intervertebral discs
Misdiagnosed lumbar tumor
Undiagnosed Ependymomas
Misdiagnosed mestatic cancer
Inflammatory conditions
Misdiagnosis of Paget's Disease of the bone
Surgical exposure to staphylococcus or tuberculosis bacteria
Epidural abscess (localized infection)
Epidural hematoma (localized bleeding) that causes pressure on the cauda equina region in the lower back

What to do if you suspect a spinal cord injury has occurred

Cauda Equina injuries require immediate medical treatment. If a spinal cord injury is suspected, call 911 immediately or take the person to an emergency room.

If you believe the injury may have been caused by negligence or medical malpractice, you should discuss your case with an experienced spinal cord injury attorney right away to protect your rights.
