Shoulder Dislocation Reduction in the Emergency department

A shoulder dislocation occurs when the upper arm bone (humerus) pops out of the socket of the shoulder blade (scapula). The shoulder joint, being the most mobile joint in the body, is particularly prone to dislocations due to its wide range of motion and relatively shallow socket.

Types of Shoulder Dislocation:

Anterior Dislocation (most common): The humerus moves forward out of the socket.
Posterior Dislocation: The humerus moves backward, often due to trauma or seizures.
Inferior Dislocation (rare): The humerus moves downward.

Causes:
Sports injuries
Falls or accidents
Direct trauma to the shoulder
Sudden twisting or pulling motions

Symptoms:
Severe pain in the shoulder
Visible deformity
Swelling and bruising
Inability to move the arm
Weakness or numbness in the arm or hand
