Harleston Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Norfolk, and around 18 miles south of Norwich, is the town of Harleston.

Geographically, Harleston is situated just north of the River Waveney, which determines a large part of the natural border between Norfolk and Suffolk. About a mile to the northeast is the village of Redenhall, with whom Harleston shares a civil parish. Redenhall is notable for its Grade I listed church dating from the 14th century, which served as the parish church for Harleston as well, prior to the construction of its own in 1872.

In 1259 a market charter was granted to Harleston by Henry III. Due to its traditionally subordinate position to Redenhall, there was no church in Harleston until 1872, when the church of St John the Baptist was built. Whilst not immediately apparent, many medieval timber-framed buildings are present in Harleston, obscured by frontages put up by the Georgians centuries later.

In 1855 a railway station opened in Harleston. This formed part of the Waveney Valley Line, which ran from Beccles in Suffolk to the village of Tivetshall St Margaret in Norfolk, connecting the East Suffolk Line to the Great Eastern Main Line. The station was closed to passengers in 1953, and to goods in 1966. Today, public transport to Harleston consists of direct buses from Norwich, Diss, Beccles, Bungay and various other nearby settlements.
