In anatomy labs for nursing school and other health science majors, students may be asked to identify the key differences between the male and female pelvis structure.

In this video, i highlight the key differences that can help you identify between a male and female pelvis.

Here are some of the big differences:

-Male pelvis is heavier, thicker, and rougher, whereas the female pelvis is lighter, thinner, and smoother.

-Male pelvis has a rounder obturator foramen, whereas females have more oval-shaped obturator foramina.

-Male pelvis has a heart-shaped pelvic inlet, whereas the female pelvis has an oval-shaped inlet.

-The male pelvis is narrower and taller; the female pelvis is shorter an wider.

-Females have a wider and shallower greater sciatic notch.

-Females have an 80-100 degree angle for their subpubic angle, whereas men have closer to 50-70.

-Females have a wider sacrum that is shorter and curved more; males have a longer, narrower sacrum that is less curved.

-Females have a coccyx bone that is straighter; the male coccyx bone curves toward the front of the body.
