The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 provides for several grounds on which a marriage can be dissolved by a decree of divorce. The grounds of divorce are categorized as:

Fault-based grounds:
Under Section 13(1) of the Hindu Marriage Act, a petition for divorce can be filed by either spouse on the following fault-based grounds:
a. Adultery: If either spouse has voluntary sexual intercourse with a person other than their spouse, it is considered adultery and can be a ground for divorce.

b. Cruelty: If either spouse has treated the other with cruelty, it can be a ground for divorce. Cruelty includes both mental and physical cruelty.

c. Desertion: If either spouse has deserted the other for a continuous period of not less than two years immediately preceding the presentation of the petition, it can be a ground for divorce.

d. Conversion: If either spouse has ceased to be a Hindu and converted to another religion, it can be a ground for divorce.

e. Mental Disorder: If either spouse has been suffering from a mental disorder of such a kind or to such an extent that it is not possible to live together, it can be a ground for divorce.

No-fault grounds:
Under Section 13(1A) of the Hindu Marriage Act, a petition for divorce can be filed by either spouse on the no-fault grounds
