Although practically the entire world and its population live on dry land, 71% of our surface is covered by water. Almost all of this water is in the oceans, of which only 2.5% is fresh water, not salt water. Most of the Earth's fresh water is in glaciers, ice sheets, and permafrost, and in water and ice below the surface. Most of the rest, as you might expect, resides in large reservoirs of liquid water on our land: Earth's lakes.

Freshwater lakes make up only 0.007% of all the water on Earth, but they make up most of the liquid fresh water on our surface. Most of the Earth's lakes are relatively young, less than 18,000 years old and formed at the end of the last ice age. Only 20 lakes in the world are old: more than a million years. But Baikal is not only the oldest lake on Earth, 25-30 million years old, but also the largest.
