Here’s another test you may have seen the throwing and trimming of a while ago, this time we’re catching up with the glazing and reduction firing and ‘fixing’ the finished, glaze fired object.

I don’t mind it but I also don’t love it. In other tests the bronze flecks have created flat, molten pool of metal on the surface, not these strange lumps? I’m not entirely why it’s not this, perhaps I glazed the vessel too thinly, meaning there was nothing for the metal to flux and melt into. Or could the metal have gotten too hot, boiling into these little bumps? Either way I’ll be refiring this jar, I think. I plan on coating another layer of glaze over it and sending it through the kiln again to cone ten, (1290ºC).

The fired vessel itself also teetered from side to side after being fired, this is why I’m levelling the jar’s base on a diamond pad on the wheel. Sadly, this causes the clay to become discoloured slightly, revealing darker stoneware within as the surface layer is polished away. This would change if I do fire it again, but first I’m going to have to figure out how to glaze it evenly with this crimson glaze all over again. It’s that, or I’ll coat the vessel with black iron oxide and hope it doesn’t flood onto the kiln shelf and stick it in place.
