Back then, you could optimize a page for a keyword by simply putting the keyword through the content and building a lot of backlinks. It would automatically help you rank on the first page for that keyword. That’s not the case anymore.

Today, Google is storing all kinds of information in an entire virtual encyclopedia called Google Knowledge Graph. Let’s talk about it this episode of Digital Marketing 101.

Whenever you are searching for something, Google shows you other facts it thinks are related to that keyword on the right-hand side of your web page (that is on desktop; mobile has a different location). For example, if you search for Apple, you see the founder, the company, the stock symbol, and so on. That’s what Google Knowledge Graph is about.

How does it affect SEO?

Often, people don’t have to click through to the page to find the information they are looking for because Google Knowledge Graph already gives it to them. To you, it means that your customers can instantly get what they want, but you may not have much search traffic for obvious searches that Google already has on its Knowledge Graph.

What can you do to leverage this situation?

Add more information to Google Knowledge Graph. To do this, you need to claim and optimize your Google My Business profile and put schema markup throughout your pages. By doing this, you are actually helping your users to find what they are looking for more easily. Even if you have fewer visits right now, it's going to be beneficial for you in the long run.
