Santiniketan to Smithsonian: A Tribute to Tagore
Raman Siva Kumar
Professor, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, India

Raman Siva Kumar is a professor of history and art at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan. His research and writing have made significant contributions to the study of artists from Santiniketan, and have helped to bring the attention of the art world to Tagore's painting. In the article "Rabindranath and the Indian Art Scene," he delineates the historical and cultural factors that lead Tagore to take up painting, finding parallels between the artworks and themes in the writings. Kumar's books include The Santiniketan Murals; My Pictures: A Collection of Paintings by Rabindranath Tagore; and Santiniketan: A Contextual Modernism. He is currently working on a comprehensive four-volume work on Tagore's pictorial oeuvre and is serving as curator of a Tagore exhibition. The exhibition will travel in Europe and the United States this year.
