How Window Weep Holes Work | Anlin Windows & Doors

Windows and patio doors are designed with a weep drainage system on the exterior bottom of the frames to help protect the inside of your home. The weep drainage system allows water to drain to the outside while preventing airflow into your home.

How the weep drainage system works:

During a wind-driven rain, water hits the outside of the window or door and falls to the sill or track area. Water then flows down due to gravity, travels through the interior weep channel and drains to the outside through the exterior weep hole as water builds up.

If you see water in your sill or track area, do not panic. It is normal for water to accumulate in the sill or track area during a period of wind-driven rain or when washing your windows and doors.

When using a hose to clean windows and doors, it is strongly recommended that the spray nozzle be set to a very light mist (no jet stream). This will reduce the chance of water overflowing and entering the interior of the home.

Periodic inspection and maintenance are needed to keep the drainage system working properly.

Use a damp towel to wash dirt and debris from sill and track areas.

Check to make certain the weep holes are always clear of dirt, stucco, sand and debris.

Use a small soft brush to clear the openings.
