The song for today's video is "After All." It was originally performed by Cher and Peter Cetera, released in 1989, and was used as the love theme for the movie "Chances Are". It was even nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 62nd Academy Awards. Nevertheless, it was completely unknown to me🫣. Perhaps it's because it doesn't blow me away. I find it lacking in power and emotion; it's a little lame. The cover I used, however, immediately impressed me. It's light and gentle, but also powerful and expressive, and it conveys the emotions that the lyrics are about. And these lyrics are very clear and fit perfectly with our two favorite lovers. I was able to translate parts of the lyrics into images quite intuitively; everything came together naturally. Other passages required a lot more thought. How do you interpret phrases such as "two angels who've been rescued from the fall" or "every step I take retreats" and translate them into images? I also spent some time thinking about the "stops and starts" mentioned in the chorus. Taken literally, they suggest several breaks and new beginnings in a relationship, which doesn't really fit with Jamie & Claire. So I decided to interpret them as beginnings and endings of stages in life, sometimes Jamie's, sometimes Claire's, sometimes both. And sometimes perhaps also as dramatic or life-changing experiences, as the highs and lows that life holds in store for them time and again. It was difficult to choose the right scenes here, cause they have to correspond to the meaning of a single word and capture the spirit of that word, both in relation to the lyrics and to the story I am telling. The strength of the emotions triggered by each scene also has to be taken into account, but this is something that can vary greatly from person to person. Here, I can only go by my own feelings. Ultimately, I play through various different arrangements, use different scenes, until I find the ones that seem most appropriate for the respective text passage, the ones that make me feel most what I see. But the visual aspect also influences my decision, as the scenes should fade into each other smoothly. All of this can be time-consuming and nerve-wracking, but it's also exciting and fulfilling, cause when everything finally falls into place, my heart beats faster. But enough behind-the-scenes stuff, back to the topic at hand 🤗
I start my video with their reunion, with their 2nd chance, the new beginning after they tried for so many years to live without each other. They managed, but only just. Ultimately, they were incomplete and unable to commit to anyone else; their hearts simply clung to each other. And so it was only a matter of time before their destiny was fulfilled and they were brought back together. We see them becoming whole, becoming one again, carried by memories that are now repeating themselves. And we see two angels who fell into the abyss, rescued by reuniting with their soulmates.
The lyrics and my story continue through their life together, year after year, filled with their love, a love that constantly grows, changes, but never fades, no matter what stands in its way. That is what is truly unique and beautiful about OL, that it accompanies a love, a marriage, through the seasons of life. And although it is often put to the test, it endures everything, even time and space. OL thus satisfies the deep desire for unconditional, romantic, passionate, true and strong love and the ability to preserve it. To have a relationship/marriage in which all this doesn't disappear over time. In the books, Roger often wonders how Jamie and Claire manage to maintain such a marriage, characterized by deep love, desire, loyalty and trust, while hoping that he and Bree will achieve the same. It's a longing that many probably share. The song allowed me to play with the romance and beauty of Jamie and Claire's love, and with the knowledge “It was meant to be, forever you and me, after all.” Enjoy, Sassenachs ✨💙
