Ontario Premier Doug Ford, alongside Lt.-Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, held a formal ceremony to proclaim the accession of King Charles III in Toronto's Queen's Park on Monday. The new monarch, King Charles III, also serves as Canada's new head of state following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“It is my duty to advise the Lieutenant Governor to issue a proclamation, under her privy seal, announcing the death of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of His Majesty King Charles III,” said Ford before he invited Dowdeswell to sign the proclamation.

Elder Garry Sault, who was also in attendance, opened the ceremony by acknowledging King Charles III's new position and explained that “We, as First Nations people, deal with the Crown because the Crown is who we made the treaties with.”

Accession proclamation ceremonies are being held across the various Canadian provinces following the federal ceremony, which took place Sept. 10 at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. Under tradition that dates back to the accession of King George III in 1760, the ceremony calls for a proclamation of accession ceremony to be held when a new sovereign inherits the throne under the death of the previous King or Queen.
