On Friday 31 October 1941 a horrific fire took place in Huddersfield Town Centre which claimed the lives of 49 people. H Booth & Son factory was destroyed in the Town's worst fire, caused by a smoker's pipe left alight inside a raincoat pocket when work had just commenced.

The people, who died, mainly women and girls, were trapped in upper floors with no escape route. Some jumped to their deaths; others managed to scramble free or were rescued from the flames.

The victims were interred in a communal grave in Edgerton Cemetery where a large memorial records the names of all those who died that tragic day.
