Riding Behind the Awesome Steam Locomotive 1309

Описание к видео Riding Behind the Awesome Steam Locomotive 1309

Listen to the delightful sounds of a great steam locomotive as we ride behind
steam locomotive 1309.

1309 was built in 1949 by Baldwin Locomotive Works. It is a 2-6-6-2
Articulated, Type H6. It has 56 inch drivers, a tractive force of 77,900 pounds
(compound), 98,000 tractive force (simple). Weighs 772,000 pounds. Is 99.7 feet
in length. Tender coal capacity is 15 tons and water is 12,000 gals.

1309 was the last 2-6-6-2 ever built and there was a total of 918 of these
built. The first 2-6-6-2 ever built was for Great Northern #1800 in 1906.
The original ones had the firebox built over the rear drivers, but around 1910
that changed to have the firebox over the rear trailing truck. The low
speed of these locomotives were particularly good for hauling heavy
coal drags, but also many found their way into logging industry in the
western parts of the US.

Interesting to note also is that National Railways of Mexico had #361 to
370 built for 3 foot gage track! Those units were built by ALCO 1929 to 1937.

It was a totally great ride on the Western Maryland Scenic Railway. We rode
in the open air car right behind 1309 and I got covered in cinders and loved
every minute of it!
