Andrew Marvell, The Garden

Andrew Marvell's The Garden is a rich foray into the genre of pastoral poetry. He engages with the topic of the right relation of man to nature as expressed in the motif of the garden. It is the one utilized repeatedly throughout Scripture, God himself being portrayed as a Gardener (as well as a Shepherd), and is also to be found in the pastoral eclogues of Theocritus and Virgil.

Marvell's engagement, as we shall see in the 'Mower' poems, draws upon this rich heritage, but it has a specific context: his concerns with the entire premises of Francis Bacon's approach to nature as a 'slave' to be used and manipulated without concerns for anything other than his own wealth and advancement.
