4-4-2 Becomes the 4-2-3-1

Similar to most teams of the era, Arsenal lined up as a 4-4-2, At least on paper. Generally, Bergkamp would play in behind Henry. With Arsenal’s shape resembling a 4-2-3-1 rather than a 4-4-2.

Wenger placed a huge emphasis on pairings within the team and how they operate together, to generate Arsenal success.

Build-up and Staggered Lines

Arsenal would often play out from the back. Favouring Toure who was the more technically proficient centre-back.

Gilberto Silva was Arsenal’s midfield progressor in the initial phase and would drop to support the defensive unit.

With Berkgamp offering the same in the forward line, Arsenal now had players between each line, creating more accessible passing options to move forward.

Importance of Verticality

Although, Arsenal could be considered a possession based team. Their intention was to move the ball forward as quickly as possible and utilise the speed in Arsenal’s forward players.

Henry would generally remain high, creating space for Bergkamp between the lines.

Both wide players and full-backs would regularly combine. A common example would see Pires move infield with Ashley Cole overlapping.

Vieira would also move forward to support. Making either a third man run or late movement into the box.
