Baby slings can pose serious risks, including positional asphyxia, if parents are unaware of how to use them safely. While slings offer a convenient and comforting way to carry infants, improper positioning can restrict a baby’s airway, making it difficult for them to breathe. Newborns, especially those under four months old, have weak neck muscles and rely on proper head positioning to keep their airways open. If a baby’s chin is pressed to their chest or their face is buried against fabric or the wearer’s body, they may struggle to get enough oxygen—sometimes without showing obvious signs of distress.

The danger is compounded by the fact that many parents aren’t properly instructed on safe babywearing practices. Not all slings come with clear safety guidelines, and many caregivers don’t realize that certain positions, like curled-up or deeply tucked postures, can be hazardous.
