【Ta form + ばかりです 】
Just did …

たform＋ところです just indicates the present time is immediately after the completion of an ation, while たform＋ばかりです is used not only right after an action's completion, but also after some time has elapsed if the speaker considers it to be a short time.


〇私は三か月前（さんかげつまえ）に日本へ来（き）たばかりです。
△私は三か月前に日本へ来（き）たところです。


Lesson 119

1. It is used to express negative things (surprise, shock, and judgement).

【Noun　+　ばかり 、Verb-てform + （ばかり）+います】

あまいものばかり食べていると、体がよわくなります。
If you eat nothing but sweets, your body will weak.


2. It can be used to say “only” or express surprise.

Noun　+　ばかり
Verb dic　+　ばかり


あなたの幸（しあわ）せを願（ねが）うばかりです。
I just hope your happiness.

い-adjective + ばかりか

It can be interchanged with ばかりでなく. They have mostly the same meaning, but ばかりでなくis used to express the feelings and emotions of the speaker, such as surprise or exclamation.


〜だけでなく、さらに〜も


(1) In the consequent, 「〜も」、「〜さえ」、「〜まで」 etc. are often used.
(2) Expressions such as intentions, orders, and solicitations rarely come in the consequent.


山田さんは、英語ばかりかフランス語までも話せる
⇒英語だけでなく、さらにフランス語も話せる


田中さんはきれいなばかりか、性格までいい
⇒田中さんはきれいなだけでなく、さらに性格もいい


だけでなくVSばかりか

The grammatical rule is the same as だけでなく, but ばかりか implies unexpectedness. That is to say, ばかりか should be attached to words which indicate unusual things. If you just express addition without unexpected nuances, you should use だけでなく


〇彼は水曜日だけでなく木曜日も働いています。
△彼は水曜日ばかりか木曜日も働いています。
He works not only on Wednesdays but also on Thursdays.


〇彼は祝日だけでなく週末も働いています。
△彼は祝日ばかりか週末も働いています。
He works on weekends as well as holidays.


今日は気温ばかりか湿度も高い。
It's not only hot but also humid today.


嘘ばかりついていると、信頼を失うばかりか、友達をなくしますよ。
If you lie all the time, you will not only lose credibility, but you will also lose friends.


薬を飲んでいるのに、咳が止まらないばかりか、ひどくなる一方だ。
Even though I'm taking medicine, my cough doesn't stop and it just keeps getting worse.
