1.AはもとよりB


It is used to give an already known fact or a representative example, and to emphasize it by presenting new information. It is a very formal expression. It indicates “not only (A), but also (B)”, or “let alone (A), (B)”. Often, (A) will be something that is considered obvious, or the most well known information in regard to the topic.

〜はもちろん〜も


結婚することには、母はもとより父も賛成だ
→結婚することには、母だけでなく父も賛成だ
Not only my mother but also my father agrees to my marriage.


私のおじいちゃんはスマホはもとよりパソコンも使ったことがない
→私のおじいちゃんはスマホだけではなくパソコンも使ったことがない
My grandfather has never used not only a smartphone but also a computer.


タバコを止めるためには本人の強い意志はもとより、家族の協力も必要だ。
In order to quit smoking, not only the strong will of the person himself but also the cooperation of his family is necessary.

2.AはもとよりB


はもとより may be used in structures where it is simply showing that (A) is the base from which (B) is also a fact. Although this may sound similar to the previous meaning, it translates closer to 'from the start, (A) is (B)', or 'by nature, (A) is (B)'.


失敗するのはもとより覚悟していたので、そんなに悔しくない。
I was prepared for failure, from the start, so I am not that disappointed.


覚悟する:I'm ready to accept the outcome.
悔しい:A certain mixture of anger and frustration and bitter resentment (over a perceived injustice to oneself)”

~はもちろんis a more casual way of saying ~はもとより


A.田中さんってフランス語が話せるの?
B.いや、フランス語はもちろん、英語も話せないよ!

B. うん、テレビを見る時間はもちろん、ゆっくり寝る時間さえもないよ。
