Yamaha recommends changing the transfer gear case oil on your Yamaha Raider after the first 600 miles, and then every 16,000 miles after that. This Raider has about 12,000 miles on it, but we’re not sure it was done the first time.

We have an aftermarket exhaust on this Raider, so we’ll need to remove that first. The exhaust gaskets were showing signs of rust, so we’ll replace them along the way.

Once we get done pulling the exhaust, we’ll get down to changing the transfer gear case oil. We’ll start by removing the fill bolt and then the drain bolt. This oil is very thick so draining it will take a little bit of time and require some patience.

Once that’s done, we’ll replace the drain bolt and remove the check bolt. Then it’s time to fill. You can use a turkey baster or any type of fluid syringe. John's using one he picked up at an auto parts store. The transfer gear case fluid is really thick and will take you some time to get it in there. You’ll know it’s full when you see fluid coming out of the hole for the check bolt. Then we’ll replace the check bolt and drain bolt.

When we’re done with that, we’ll work on getting the exhaust back in place.

A couple of quick notes here about your exhaust in situations where you may have to remove it:

First, if you handle your exhaust, be sure you wipe it down well before running the engine. Any oil from your fingers can leave an imprint on the hot chrome that is hard to get off.

Second, when you tighten your exhaust bolts back, run your bike for a couple of hundred miles and then re-tighten them. Heat cycles and vibration can cause them to work their way back out sometimes.
