French is a Romance language that evolved from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman Empire, specifically from Gallo-Romance in Northern Gaul. It is closely related to other langues d'oïl spoken in northern France and southern Belgium. French has become an official language in 27 countries and is widely spoken across about 50 countries and territories.

Provençal is spoken in Provence and parts of Drôme and Gard in southeast France by around 200,000 people. Historically, Provençal referred to the entire Occitan language, but now it specifically refers to the variety spoken in Provence. It should not be confused with Franco-Provençal (Arpetan), spoken in parts of Italy, France, and Switzerland. Provençal was used by troubadours and in literature from the 11th century. It was also used in legal, administrative, and court documents from the 13th century. Its official use declined in the 16th century, and it was replaced by French after the French Revolution in the late 18th century.
