Fiddler Stephanie Coleman and percussionist Matt O'Connell join me on this version of "Man of Constant Sorrow " that I learned from the playing and singing of Surrepta “Retta” Spradlin (1903-1978) of Bell’s Farm Kentucky with a few lines from Delta Hicks. It's on my album "While You Were Slumbering" on Sleepy Cat Records. Spardlin's version is a welcome departure from the widely known "O Brother" one, preceding that more familiar setting popularized by the Stanley Brothers. My version has its roots in Dick Burnett's (1883-1977), an early commercial recording artist from Somerset, KY, who was blinded in a scuffle and spent his life as a musician. He called it the “The Farewell Song” and was selling printed ballad sheets of the words as early as 1913 as he busked around the Tennessee Kentucky line. Banjo: relative eCGCD
