Meet Lakshmi Ram Chaudhary, a hardworking father and farmer living in the rural outskirts of Dhanchauri, Nepal. His family has lived on the same farm for generations, growing rice, wheat and maize, but Lakshmi had dreams to expand and to add a source of income that better accommodated his mobility needs.
Fish farming, or aquaculture, was the answer. When Corus organization Lutheran World Relief launched its Youth and Women Entrepreneurship Development Project in Nepal, Lakshmi joined to receive support to get his aquaculture venture off-the-ground. Through the project, Lakshmi learned how to make fish food, how to care for several types of fish and business skills such as financial literacy and bookkeeping. The project also helped him register his business with the government. In addition to training, he received nets, supplies and 900 fingerling fish to raise.
The Youth and Women Entrepreneurship Development Project fostered entrepreneurial skills of young people and women to enhance their economic prospects in Nepal. It focused on three main pillars: 1) initiating resilient startups or boosting the profitability of existing small and micro enterprises; 2) creating opportunities for integration into downstream value chain activities through partnerships with private sector firms; and 3) increasing access to necessary financial services.

Despite recent declines in poverty, Nepal remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Food insecurity, strained water resources and reductions in agricultural production are only a few of the devastating impacts of extreme weather that place millions at risk. Although women account for over half of Nepal’s agriculture workforce, significant barriers remain when it comes to health care, nutrition, education and decision-making. To foster growth in Nepal, long-term investment is required in rural livelihoods, health systems and disaster risk reduction.
Lutheran World Relief has been working in Nepal since 2009, reaching indigenous, Dalit and marginalized communities with programs in agriculture, food security, entrepreneurship, disaster risk reduction and humanitarian assistance. Our holistic approach prioritizes women and youth and helps communities to build the resilience they need to thrive. By partnering with local non-governmental organizations, farmers’ organizations, and private sector actors, Lutheran World Relief continues to strengthen agricultural enterprises while enhancing weather-adaptive systems.
