"Freedom In the Air" was compiled and produced by Guy Carawan and Alan Lomax from Guy's 1961 and 1962 interviews with and recordings of civil rights activists in Albany, Georgia, representing what became known as the Albany Movement. The primary narrator is Charles Sherrod, an Albany organizer and field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee; the sermons and congregational singing are led by the Rev. Ben Gay. Lomax edited the album together at the Vanguard label's studios in NYC, and it was released on the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee's own record label (catalog number SNCC-101).
