Ólafsfjörður began forming at the end of the 19th Century.
During the golden days of herring fishing in the 1940s and 1950s, the town grew around the harbour.
The abundance of herring caused the town to have an enormous boom in both it's economy and population.
The herring has now gone, but fishing remains as the town's main industry, along with services related to tourism.
The museum located within Pálshús, one of the oldest houses in Ólafsfjörður, is a must visit - https://www.palshusmuseum.is/
