Many trekkers feel that carrying a trekking backpack is difficult. But the fact of the matter is that carrying a backpack is not as difficult as it is made to be.

Backpacks these days are so designed that the weight is distributed across your hips and shoulders (especially if you are carrying an internal frame backpack, as most of you will). It is the hip that is actually doing most of the lifting. Hips are the strongest bones of your body and can carry a lot more than the 8 – 9 kg of your backpack.

Having said that, you should have a strong shoulder and core strength to be able to carry such a heavy load on your back. This is why at Indiahikes we always suggest you include shoulder and hip exercises as part of your fitness preparation.

In this video, Anushree shows you some of the exercises to strengthen your shoulder and hips so that you can carry the backpack easily on your trek.
