There are three types of interview questions – experience, self-evaluation, and behavior-based – each unpack the talents of candidates in the selection process. Experience questions ask candidates to tell the interviewers what they think about their past experiences and education related to the job. 

If the position you are applying for is responsible for managing a budget, you may be asked about your experience in financial or budget management. As you prepare to interview, recall the size of the budget and how long you managed it for. How did you plan, track, and reconcile your expenditures? And, how did you manage revenue?

Expect follow-up questions about challenges you faced in budgeting, or any cost-saving measures you implemented that might have helped the bottom line or your organization’s efficiency. If you haven’t managed a budget before and you are asked this question, perhaps you helped with a portion of the budget, inventory, or purchasing recommendations from which you can draw parallels.
