He depicts the "Golden Wind and Jade Dew" (autumn wind and white dew) of their annual meeting as a moment surpassing countless days of mundane togetherness on earth. The poem argues that true love transcends physical distance, famously concluding that if love is everlasting, it does not demand "morning and twilight" proximity.
2. The Tragic True Story Behind the Verses This poem was not just about mythology; it reflected Qin Guan's real-life heartbreak. Written in the autumn of 1097 while he was in Chenzhou, the poem was composed for a singer (a "righteous courtesan") he met in Changsha.
• The Meeting: While exiled and traveling south, Qin Guan met a singer in Changsha who was a devoted fan of his work. They spent several days together before he was forced to leave.
• The Promise: He promised to return, and this poem uses the legend of the stars to express his longing for her.
• The Aftermath: Tragically, they never reunited. Qin Guan died in 1100 in Tengzhou. Upon hearing the news, the singer traveled hundreds of miles to mourn him and reportedly died of grief.
