Replicating SAMURAI JACK background art by Scott Wills: Acrylic Gouache Techniques & Textures

Описание к видео Replicating SAMURAI JACK background art by Scott Wills: Acrylic Gouache Techniques & Textures

Samurai Jack, created by Genndy Tartakovsky and art directed by Scott Wills, is beautiful, witty, and thought provoking. It’s one of my favourite (Western) animated series of all time… up there with the Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy, South Park, Power Puff Girls and Dexter’s Lab. And since I’m heading to Japan for the next few weeks to paint and draw the sights, it felt right to replicate this piece.

I love how the temples are blending in with the landscape, the atmospheric perspective giving the flat, graphic aesthetic depth. And those red roofs! Love the contrast against the grey and green. Wills is a master of minimal colour palettes, using textures and stylized shapes to create unique and unforgettable environments.

As mentioned in the video, I have several Instagram accounts, but, if you want to follow my Japan art adventures I recommend these two:
