Return To High Winds - My Favorite Abandoned Lodge To Visit On Assateague Island National Seashore

Описание к видео Return To High Winds - My Favorite Abandoned Lodge To Visit On Assateague Island National Seashore

Of all the abandoned hunting lodges left behind on Assateague Island, High Winds is my favorite to visit. The walk to the lodge is the most scenic and peaceful, but it's also a bit on the challenging side making High Winds less visited by others.

This private 2,300 sqft lodge built between 1922 and 1924 had 9 bed rooms 17 rooms total and an octagonal living room with a big fireplace meant for entertaining. It had the best views of the Sinepuxent bay! But, High Winds had a tragic side too. In 1955 a boat carrying 4 adults and 2 children capsized and all 6 died. Mitchell Clogg, his wife Dorothy and their 2 children were onboard, Mitchell was a co-owner of the lodge.

If looking for the lodges, I highly recommend winter as the time to explore. The massive Assateague mosquitos are gone as well as large black snakes and other animals.

While there may be a few lodges on the VA side, all the lodges we visit are on the MD side of the island. If you decide to research the island, it's a deep rabbit hole to go down. From past presidential visits and ship wreck of a presidential yacht, to hotels and future communities trying to be built, the history is long and will keep you digging for more.

Thanks for watching!
