Let’s explore safety and health. Safety and health is about ensuring the safety, health and welfare of people at work. There are four basic elements that good safety and health programs share.

Management Leadership involves proactive policy development, goal setting, effective use of resources, and setting an example.

Employee Involvement provides the means for workers to identify hazards, recommend and monitor safety, and participate.

Hazard Control provides a means to understand and control sources of danger in the workplace. Job Hazard Analysis is the ongoing process of identifying and assessing hazards in your organization.

Effective controls protect workers from workplace hazards; help avoid injuries, illnesses, and incidents; minimize or eliminate safety and health risks. There are three types of hazard control, given in the order they should be used.

Engineering controls include physical changes to the work area or process that effectively minimize an employee’s exposure to the hazard. An example is redesigning the workstation to minimize ergonomic injuries.

Administrative controls limit daily exposure to hazards by adjusting work tasks or schedules. For example, written policy on the safe lifting of loads.

OSHA Compliance promotes an environment focused on meeting and exceeding OSHA compliance standards.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the federal agency responsible for protecting the health and safety of workers.

OSHA enforces job safety and health standards by conducting inspections and, in some cases, issuing citations and fines. They also provide technical assistance to employers on health and safety issues.
