THE LETTER A.

B,

1.           The letter ‘A' was the first letter that Christy learnt. It is the beginning of the English Alphabet. So it also symbolises a beginning in Christy’s life.

Also, every child's student life begins with the learning of the letter ‘A'. So when Christy learnt how to write the letter ‘A', he had taken the first step towards literacy and independence.

2.             Christy Brown's family was a supportive and affectionate family. His parents, especially, his mother was determined to teach him and bring him up as a normal child. He was surrounded by loved who accepted him as he is. In such a supportive environment Christy Brown developed and understood about determination. This had a great impact on his life in his growing years.

3.            The statement _____ “Very often we tend to seek for professional support when it comes to children with disabilities. But children learn through observing and imitating their peers and siblings” ,is a debatable one. In many cases professionally trained people can help and support the specially abled children. There are people who give their heart and soul in working for the children who need support.

However, no support can take the place of a family. In cases like Christy’s, where there is no help from the professionals, family plays a vital role in the emotional, mental and social development and moral support. So it can be agreed that children learn better through observing and imitating their peers and siblings.

4.       There are various examples of instances in the story that shows the determined hope in Christy's mother. Firstly, when the doctors examined Christy and labelled him as a very interesting but a hopeless case, Christy's mother kept believing that his body was crippled, not his mind and she took the matter in her own hands and started to try and improve Christy's condition. Secondly, we also read about a situation when his mother tried to show pictures of animals and birds from a book presented to Christy by Santa Claus. Thirdly, when Christy took the yellow chalk frm his sister and tried to scribble with it, his mother encouraged him to write with it. He became nervous and tensed when everyone looked at him and was about to give up, but his mother’s patience and determination on him made him to successfully write the letter ‘A'.

5.            Christy's mother faced moments of desperation when she first detected that somthing was wrong with her son. She tried to correct him by placing her hands on the back of his neck to keep it steady. But when she took her hand away, his head would drop back again. She was in despair when all the doctors and even the relatives said the child was an imbecile and can’t be cured. But her greatest moment of despair was when Christy turned five years. She was showing him the pictures of animals and flowers from a big storybook that he got from Santa Clause. She tried to make Christy repeat the names of the pictures and asked if he liked the pictures. On receiving no sign of response from Christy, she broke down completely and had to leave the room. All these instances show Christy's mother in despair

6.              Four adjectives that describe Christy's mother are___ patient, determined, hopeful and supportive.

Christy’s mother patiently waited for him to show a sign that he was not mentally defective when she realised that somthing was wrong with her son. She took care of Christy without complaining and continued to teach Christy herself though he could not respond or reply her. Even when the doctors and relatives said that nothing could be done to improve Christy's condition, Christy's mother was determined to take the matter into her own hands. For five years she took care of Christy without seeing any visible sign of development. But she was still hopeful that her son would prove himself to the world that he was not an imbecile. Christy ‘s mother had been supportive to Christy right from his birth. Because of her supportive nature, Christy said that he would always have his mother by his side to help him fight in his battle of life and to inspire him with new strengths when he was almost about to give up.
