STORYLINE:
Hezbollah guerrillas pounded Israel on Tuesday afternoon with a new barrage of rocket fire, killing one Israeli in the northern town of Nahariya, Israeli officials said.
Police said six to 10 rockets struck Nahariya, killing one man as he walked down a street toward a bomb shelter and setting fire to the top of a two-story apartment building.
Emergency services and fire fighters rushed to the scene.
Another rocket attack on Nahariya earlier on Tuesday caused no injuries.
Rockets also hit the northern city of Haifa, where air raid sirens repeatedly sounded, as well as the towns of Safed, Acre and Kiryat Shmona.
In Kiryat Shmona a water pumping station was hit.
The army said a total of 50 missiles were fired at northern Israel on Tuesday, raising to 750 the number that have hit the region near the Lebanese border since Israel's offensive on July 12.
The missile attacks have forced hundreds of thousands of Israelis to take cover in underground shelters.
As Hezbollah was rocketing Israel's northern cities Israeli tanks, at an unspecified location, were shelling targets across the border into Lebanon.
"Israel's response to Hezbollah firing on civilian targets in Israel and hiding behind their own civilians whilst they fire at ours - we will continue to attack Hezbollah wherever we can find them," Miri Eisen, an Israeli government spokeswoman, said.
At least 227 people have been killed in Lebanon, and more than 450 wounded, according to figures reported by Lebanese police and the military.
According to Israeli authorities 25 Israelis have been killed, among them eight soldiers.
